Documents and details we’ll review
Out-of-state title
The title is needed when changing ownership or requesting a California title. If your lender holds it, tell us before your visit so we can review your options.
Current out-of-state registration
Have your current registration available. In some same-owner cases, registration can be reviewed without surrendering the title; that does not issue a California title.
California-compliant insurance
Confirm that your policy is accepted for California registration. Out-of-state and out-of-country insurance documents are not accepted.
Owner and vehicle information
Start with the vehicle year, make, model, state of title, and ownership details. We’ll confirm which identification and supporting documents your transaction needs.
Smog certification, when required
We’ll confirm whether smog certification applies to your vehicle. Electric vehicles do not require it. Ask about the option that includes coordinating a smog appointment.
Bring the vehicle for VIN verification
The vehicle must be physically present for VIN verification. We’ll review your situation before confirming the appropriate verification and processing steps.

Out-of-state registration: $250 CVP service fee.
With smog appointment coordination: $275 CVP service fee.

Get your checklist and fees. We review the information, identify missing documents, and separate CVP service fees from DMV charges.

Prepare for your visit. Complete any required smog inspection, bring the vehicle for VIN verification, and have the confirmed documents ready.

Complete the paperwork and payment. We process eligible transactions and explain what you will receive and any remaining steps. Completion and title delivery depend on DMV review; timing is not guaranteed.
