Important Information
- California generally uses the Application for Replacement or Transfer of Title, REG 227.
- Issuing a replacement title cancels the original title.
- If your address differs from DMV records, additional identification and proof of ownership may be required in person.
- If a title was replaced within the last 90 days, CHP vehicle verification may be required.
- A lienholder release may require notarization, depending on the vehicle record.

California Duplicate Title FAQs
Can I replace a California title that was lost or stolen?
Yes, in many cases. We review the vehicle record and ownership information to confirm the documents and signatures needed.
Can a vehicle be transferred if the original title is missing?
Sometimes. California's REG 227 can be used for certain replacement-and-transfer transactions, depending on the seller, buyer, and lienholder requirements.
Does the REG 227 need to be notarized?
Not in every case. Notarization may be required when a legal owner or lienholder must release its interest.
Will I receive the replacement title at your office?
No. We can process an eligible transaction, but the California DMV mails the replacement title after processing.
